White Oak Slab Cabinets

When you're working with wood that's as striking as White Oak why overcomplicate things. We kept it simple with this one and let the wood speak for itself.

The Design

Being that the kitchen was so small, our main objective was to create as much storage with as little area as possible. Here's a first draft design. Some additions were made while working on the project.

The Process

When the raw White Oak arrives the first step is to mill it down and glue it up. We took an old fashioned hand plane to this one to ensure it was nice and flat.
Once we've got all the lumber flattened we chop them up into the smaller pieces that will become the cabinet doors. These all getting mounted onto the box frame with soft close hinges.
We added some horizontal batten beams to the back of the doors to prevent any warping or cupping over time.
Once all the bigger items have been completed we can start focusing on the small, attention to detail stuff. Here's a silverware tray that slides back to reveal a hidden drawer. Pretty cool, right?

The Final Product

Here they are in all their glory!

We could always make it again. Let's chat.
